Established in 1981.
For a skate shop to be in business for 5 years really is an impressive accomplishment, but we past that mark up a long time ago. Very soon we’ll be coming up on our 30th year in business, a huge mark for any company and a real milestone for this industry.
Writing out our history here would take way more space then this, and maybe one day soon we’ll give it a try. I can tell you this, in all the years we’ve been open Specialty Sports has been a skateboard shop. From day one we had decks on the wall and wheels in the cabinet. In our first year open Dave Schmidt would drive down from VT and deliver us Burton boards, funny thing is this made us one of the first shops to sell snowboards on the entire East Coast and definitely the first shop in the tri-state area.
The following summer while the local ski shops would switch over and sell patio furniture (something they still all do) we gave selling wakeboards a try. I’m not sure what the first company we carried was, but it could have been Wake Tech the predecessor to Liquid Force a brand we still sell today.
